The Billing Specialist or Patient Financial Counselor serves as a one-on-one, single point of contact liaison between the patient, providers, external departments, or other responsible person(s) to ensure that accurate financial estimates for services are appropriately communicated, collected, and recorded.
Prepares self-pay and insurance out-of-pocket estimates, accurately explains the details of the estimate to the patient
- Interview patients to obtain accurate demographic and financial information from self-pay and high-risk patients as needed, including facilitating the processing of financial assistance/charity care applications
Educates patients regarding benefit coverage- Documents all patient account correspondence in the appropriate note fields, designated forms, or databases in PM software
Explains financial options, including financing options through CareCredit or other approved resource
- Counsels patients on past due balances who are scheduled for surgery
Performs daily payment collection and reconciliation activities
- May also assist with scheduling diagnostic or surgical procedures, verify required documents have been obtained, and explain procedure guidelines and policies as directed by leadership
Assists outside agencies/vendors to ensure we have exhausted all other payer sources prior to a charity write-off- Responds to all price estimate requests within 48 business hours
Interview patients, families, and other related parties within HIPAA guidelines and work with insurance companies to determine current insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage, including secondary insurance- This role is not clinical in nature, they are not making any clinical decisions or providing any clinical advice to patients, etc. They will strictly follow the script provided and triage patients when clinical questions/concerns arise that are outside the scope of this role.
Knowledge of reimbursement practices, rules and regulations- Experience with billing and payment systems
Proven excellent customer service, communication, verbal and written skills with an emphasis on organization and attention to detail
- Ability to problem solve and multi-task; keep confiden
Knowledge of insurance concepts - Both private-payer and government-sponsored- Demonstrated basic telephone skills (transfer, conference, placing a patient on hold)
Knowledge of medical terminology, basic medical coding, and billing
- Excel in a team-based environment with a positive attitude
