Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • New Parts:

a. Include having to purchase from an un-validated supplier that HMWS has not dealt with before. this can lead to:

i. Illegitimate supplier (scam).

ii. Supplier sending incorrect parts.

iii. Supplier sending insufficient parts

iv. Supplier sending in-complete parts

v. Supplier putting incorrect details on the shipping documents, leading to customs problems.

vi. Supplier claiming, they have sufficient stock, when they don't, then after payment they tell you, there is a long lead time.

b. For new parts, especially connectors, we need to consider the wire specified by the customer to ensure, its OD (Outside Diameter) is within the specifications of the sealing of the connector, and for that matter also the CSA (cross-sectional area of the conductor, to ensure we have suitable terminals with the correct plating material.

c. Request spec sheets for all & every new part.

d. Requirement for special insertion/extraction tooling or equipment, this may not be apparent at the time of ordering the parts.

e. Terminal's tooling - until the terminals arrive, it won't be possible to confirm 100% if we have the tooling (Applicator) for the terminals. trying to make do with tooling that is almost correct, can lead to connector damage, particularly on fine intricate connectors. (HMWS policy is to use reel terminals only unless the terminal is intended to be a loose piece terminal or unless the customer specifies loose piece terminals) currently, Automated systems used on the Pro1/pro2 spreadsheet will automatically select the terminals, so this might require a manual intervention to amend it.

f. If the Customer insists on using their own harness part number & revision, HMWS will allocate its own harness part number as well, in order to control revisions internally. This can be communicated to the customer also, for their ordering reference.
  • 2. Ordering of BOM, from a purchasing perspective,

a. If terminals always consider:

i. Reel type only unless the customer specified otherwise.

ii. If non-genuine connector housings are to be used, or a different brand to the existing HMWS preferred brand, also consider the possibility of different numbering on connector housings & the possibility that different terminals could be required.

iii. Ensure that the terminals in mating connectors are of the same plating material (if electro-plated terminals, or of the same base material if not).

iv. Always allow additional terminals for test crimping (minimum 100 of each terminal item code for new connector terminals).

v. Always allow additional parts for ALL new parts, when creating BOM for any new harness, to allow for:

  • Short supply by the supplier

  • Damaged parts in freight
  • 3. Damage parts in the production process

  • Loss.

    b. If cable or tube, order significantly more than required, to allow for errors in cutting length, leading to excessive scrap.
  • 3. From an Engineering perspective:

a. Check revision level & drawing level.

b. Double check any dimensions, especially if converted from Imperial measurements to metric measurements.

c. Check any specific customer tolerances.

d. Check all & any specific requirements, included within the email or drawings

e. Consider customer feedback on improvements, this needs to be 1 time communicated, taking into account all our recommendations on improving the product, especially in terms of: -

i. Branch origins (if the harness has been converted from a sleeving or conduit harness, it may have a lot of branches, coming out at the same point, this will look very ugly in the braid & will be very bulky & inflexible.

ii. Resistors & Diodes spliced into the wiring loom, should also be avoided as this creates a non-flexible point in the harness, which will be very susceptible to breaking.

iii. Consider covering material and its effect on protection & flexibility.

iv. Consider, if any custom-made assembly jig might be required, this is particularly prevalent on high complex, tight tolerance harnesses, or harnesses with large numbers of physically small circuits.

v. Also consider the orientation of connectors, many mispen & large connectors can have back shells that can divert the wires to flow out of the connector in different directions.

vi. Try to avoid any splicing of any type of multicore cables in the harness.

vii. Consider, existing or custom bussed receptacles to avoid splices of any multicore cables if necessary.

  • Quotation Review and provide the final product quotation to the customer.

  • Time Line Communicate a realistic timeline for the project (New Harness/product), allowing for all of the above variables & un-knowns

  • Especially during these times of unpredictable supply, for any critical deadlines we must consider tracking numbers & the monitoring of the tracking to verify the arrival. also consider our confidence level of any ETA, s that has not yet been shipped (We cannot assume ETA, s is reliable).

  • Predicted forecast should also be considered so that purchasing knows what quantities we should be considering, not only what qty, s is required for this order. this also has an effect on the decision-making regarding tooling & terminal purchasing, this will also be very relevant in the process of machine / special equipment evaluation (making things more efficient in the future).

Proto-types should also be considered for highly complex new harnesses or harnesses, which include processes that we have not yet encountered.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Technical/ Bachelor's degree related to engineering. Must have high numerical aptitude.
  • With a high level of Management skills.
Experience in wiring harness Manufacturing is an advantage.
  • Can interpret drawings to identify processes, tools & equipment and materials to be used.
Resilient, enthusiastic, self-reliant, and can work well with teams.
  • With a strong sense of responsibility, maturity & professionalism
With coordinating skills and can communicate well in English language, both written and orally
