Major Function:
The Transport Manager oversees the planning, execution, and optimization of the company's transportation network to ensure the safe, cost-effective, and timely delivery of goods. This role involves managing carrier relationships, monitoring transportation costs, implementing fleet management solutions, and driving continuous improvements in transport operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Transport Operations Management
- Oversee daily transport activities, including scheduling, dispatching, routing, and tracking of shipments.
- Ensure the efficient and safe movement of goods across the transportation network to meet service level agreements (SLAs) and customer requirements.
- Manage and monitor the performance of transportation service providers, both in-house and outsourced.
Fleet Management and Optimization
- Oversee the company fleet, ensuring maintenance schedules, fuel management, and compliance with legal and safety standards.
- Optimize vehicle and driver allocation to maximize capacity utilization and minimize transportation costs.
- Implement route optimization strategies to reduce fuel costs and delivery times.
Carrier and Vendor Management
- Develop and maintain relationships with third-party logistics providers (3PLs), carriers, and suppliers.
- Negotiate contracts, rates, and service terms with carriers and ensure that they meet performance standards.
- Address carrier performance issues and develop contingency plans for service disruptions.
Cost Control and Budgeting
- Manage and control transportation budget, including fuel costs, maintenance expenses, and third-party service fees.
- Track and analyze transport costs, identifying opportunities for cost reduction without compromising quality or safety.
- Implement cost-saving measures, such as optimizing load capacity, negotiating favorable contract terms, and consolidating shipments.
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure all transportation operations comply with company policies, local laws, and safety regulations.
- Maintain records and documentation related to transport compliance, including permits, insurance, and safety inspections.
- Conduct regular audits and training to ensure safety standards are met and promote a culture of safety among drivers.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Use transportation management systems (TMS) and analytics to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) like on-time delivery, fuel efficiency, and cost-per-mile.
- Prepare and present performance reports to the management team, highlighting areas for improvement and providing actionable insights.
- Track industry trends and incorporate best practices to keep the company's transportation function competitive.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead and motivate a team of drivers, dispatchers, and transportation coordinators, providing coaching and performance feedback.
- Establish clear KPIs for team members and manage performance based on these metrics.
- Conduct training and professional development programs to upskill team members and improve overall efficiency.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Transportation, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation or logistics management, preferably within the supply chain industry.
- Proven experience managing fleets, vendors, and transportation costs.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS) and fleet management software.
- Familiarity with route optimization software, GPS tracking, and telematics.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze transportation data and create actionable insights.
