Role Summary:The Head of Transportation is pivotal in managing and optimizing our trucking operations. This position involves supervising business unit heads, coordinating logistics, and ensuring seamless transportation services. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, industry expertise, and a passion for driving operational excellence.
Provide strategic direction for the transportation department, aligning with overall company goals.- Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement transportation strategies.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
Supervise and mentor business unit heads, including fleet managers, dispatchers, and maintenance teams.
Monitor daily transportation activities, including route planning, load scheduling, and driver assignments.
- Address operational challenges promptly and implement corrective actions.
Optimize fleet utilization, fuel efficiency, and compliance with safety regulations.
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for transportation operations.- Regularly review performance metrics related to on-time delivery, driver productivity, and cost control.
Take proactive measures to meet or exceed performance targets.
- Vendor and Partner Management:
Collaborate with external carriers, suppliers, and vendors to ensure seamless transportation services.
- Negotiate contracts, rates, and service agreements.
Evaluate vendor performance and address any issues.
Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including hours of service, vehicle inspections, and licensing.- Promote a safety-first culture among drivers and transportation staff.
- Budgeting and Cost Control:
Develop and manage the transportation budget.- Monitor expenses related to fuel, maintenance, and equipment.
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising service quality.
- Technology and Innovation:
Stay abreast of industry trends and technological advancements.
- Implement transportation management systems (TMS) and other tools to enhance efficiency.
Explore innovative solutions for route optimization and real-time tracking.
Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field (Master's preferred).Proven experience (minimum 8 years) in transportation management, preferably in the trucking industry.
Strong leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and problem-solving acumen.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Familiarity with transportation regulations and compliance.- Proficiency in using transportation software and analytics tools.
