Job descriptionresearch and evaluate various materials, building methods and structural approaches to develop more efficient, cost-effective and safe ways to design and build essential structures. Other typical responsibilities in structural engineering include:
- Calculate the pressure and stress a building may encounter
Create and test models using computer software- Recommend repairs, additions and other changes to existing structures
Develop construction budgets
- Evaluate materials for new construction projects
Collaborate with architects and other engineers on building design and construction- Make sure structures meet the building codes, legal regulations and health and safety requirements
Conduct structural analysis to inspect the performance of each structural element
- Design structural systems to ensure they meet the performance criteria and safety standards
Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with design specifications and address any structural concerns during the construction process- Perform risk assessments to identify potential hazards a structure may experience and design systems to overcome those hazards
