Job Summary: The Chief Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise and leadership in the planning, development, and execution of engineering operations within a commercial real estate portfolio. This role requires strong technical acumen, team management skills, and the ability to effectively collaborate with different stakeholders to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of all building systems.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of engineer/s, technicians, and subcontractors, ensuring optimal performance and productivity.
- Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program for all building systems, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
- Oversee, monitor, and optimize the operation of building systems to ensure compliance with established industry standards, codes, and regulations.
- Manage the budget for engineering operations, utilizing resources effectively, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Conduct regular inspections of building systems and equipment to identify and address potential issues proactively.
- Coordinate with property managers, tenants, and other stakeholders to address engineering-related concerns and provide timely solutions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for emergency response and escalation procedures related to building systems.
- Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulations, and implement best practices to enhance building operations and sustainability.
- Maintain accurate records, including maintenance logs, equipment manuals, and safety documentation.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and contractors to ensure reliable and cost-effective service delivery.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in building engineering, with a focus on commercial real estate.
- Extensive knowledge of building systems, codes, construction practices, and technical standards.
- Proven experience in team management, including resource allocation, coaching, and performance evaluation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) systems and other relevant software applications.
- Understanding of sustainability principles and energy management practices.
- Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergency situations as needed.
- Physical fitness to perform occasional strenuous tasks and inspections.
