The beginning of the year is an ideal time for a fresh start—and for many people the number one goal is to land a new job. In fact, according to the latest Monster survey conducted in Philippines, the majority of respondents don’t feel much satisfied with the work-life balance policies in their companies.

Thankfully the job market in the Philippines is upbeat; driven by a healthy economy and growing skilled talent. What’s more, salaries across the top, most in-demand jobs have also grown.

But beyond stiff competition and better opportunities, why do so many people want to switch jobs? Let’s breakdown the reasons:

Limited growth opportunities
Learning is critical. Employees tend to feel like they’re stagnating if left unchallenged at work. No one expects to learn something new every day, but good workers are keen to improve and expand their core skills. Employees often have to take this into their own hands and proactively ask for relevant learning and growth opportunities at work.

But if these prospects don’t exist at your current job, it may be a sign that the company isn’t serious about your career advancement.

Changing paths
The future for some fields looked very promising when you entered it, but disruption is the new normal and it’s driving new job opportunities.

According to the latest Monster Employment Index, a monthly gauge of online job posting activity, Philippines observed a positive 11 % year-on-year growth from 2018 to 2019; with the consumer goods/ FMCG sector witnessing about 22 % annual growth, followed by a staggering 21% year-on-year growth in the hospitality industry. Furthermore, the region recorded a 19% y-o-y growth in the demand for HR & Admin professionals.

So if you’re considering a career switch, some of the booming job sectors in the Philippines are FMCG, hospitality and Human resources.

Better compensation
There are several reasons employees make a switch, and more money is often top of that list. A new baby, a major life event, rising cost of living, or health challenges are all common catalysts people cite when they want to quit for a higher salary elsewhere. However, be wary when continually job hopping for nominal pay rises – in the short term it can be helpful, but long-term it could cause employers to view you as an unreliable hire.
