Philippines’ current oil and gas production is clustered around offshore northwest Palawan and the Recto (Reed) Bank in the West Philippines Sea (WPS). Both Palawan and Recto is known to hold significant gas resources and support the country’s dependence on oil imports. With WPS promising future energy security and self-sufficiency, the country is showing a great potential for offshore hydrocarbons exploration and development.
Also the country is garnering tremendous support from the government to expedite exploration activity leading to a several oil and gas players ramp up their efforts on the exploration and surveying fronts. Production is mainly dominated by Phillipines National Oil Company along with other large conglomerates, including Exxon Mobil Corp., Shell Philippines Exploration B.v., Nido Petroleum Ltd., BHP Billiton Petroleum and Gaoc Prduction Company.
According to the data showcased by the Philippines Department of Energy (DOE), the country has produced approx. 1.64 Mn barrels of oil in 2012 as compared to no oil production before the year 2000. The Galoc field accounted for 1.5Mn barrels. The Nido oil field is the second largest producing oil field, followed by the Matinloc and North Matinloc fields. DOE aims to make the country 60 percent self-sufficient in energy by 2024.
